University Profile

The Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht (Berlin School of Economics and Law) was established on the 1st of April 2009. It's main campus is located at Badensche Straße 52, but the university is also composed of 3 other buildings in Berlin to welcome its 11.000 students and 1.000 lecturers.

HWR provides 55 degree programmes within the disciplines of business and economics, law, the social sciences, public administration, and engineering.

The university is part of the “Alliance for Excellence” and has also been awarded by the Certificate of a family-friendly university in 2016 and the Total E-Quality prize for its work in the area of equal opportunities for six consecutive years.

Many of its teachers and lecturers are also making research or are involved in public and private companies. There is also a huge international dimension at HWR thanks to more than 160 partnerships throughout the world.

Mission: According to the university's website, they take the relevant social, economic and ecological issues and topics as their point of orientation.

They regard their work as part of lifelong learning in a process informed by humanist ideals and a commitment to social responsibility.

They seek to impart their key values of openness, enthusiasm, courage and critical thought, promote mutual relations informed by respect, esteem and dialogue, and foster self-confidence and personal development.

 My experience at HWR:

For this summer semester (April-July 2019), I chose 6 different courses mainly focusing on international management with an intercultural approach of nowadays issues. All my lessons are in English and many of my teachers are coming from different parts of the world (Mexico, Portugal, Germany...)

In my opinion after a month in Berlin, the studies in Germany are more personalized and focusing on the students' capacities and needs rather than on a global cursus that everyone has to follow. As an exemple, one of my courses entitled Communication and Interaction in a Professional Context is a kind of social laboratory in which everyone is free to make his own "experiences" and get feedbacks from the others and the lecturer who gives us many relevant tips to improve our communication skills.

Moreover, Berlin is one of the most multicultural cities in Europe. Thanks to this, we are many exchange students during the courses which allows us to have an internationalized point of view over the topics we discuss. Furthermore, it is really interesting (and sometimes a bit difficult) to work with people who behave differently or have other ways to work. But, being in constant interaction with foreign people at the university but also outside is a perfect way to discover new cultures while improving my level in English.

In Berlin are 165.000 students which makes it a perfect city for student life, mainly during the summer semester when the weather is not so cold !
